Barry Pollin, Head of Development at Welsh Wrestling, recently caught up with Faith Attwell, owner of The Hanger – Human Performance Centre at her premises in Riverside Park, Penarth Road, Cardiff to discuss a host of new initiatives including the club’s purchase of new matting and the creation of a junior class targeting young people from around 7/14 years old as a way of introducing them to freestyle wrestling.
The junior class will be taught by former Commonwealth Games competitor and Northern Ireland international, Hugh McCloskey, who said, “We’re making good progress and are on target to re-open up fully within the next few weeks, I think the new slot will likely be from 4:30pm to 5:30pm every Thursday afternoon and so far, the level of interest has far exceeded expectations”.
Welsh Wrestling is certainly detecting a lot of activity in the Cardiff area and is currently assessing the demand for the reintroduction of a permanent class in the Sport Wales National Centre in Sophia Gardens. The early feedback is excellent and with the return of Welsh Senior Squad training on a monthly basis to the venue, the prospect of such a venture is certainly realistic.
